Arsenal have improved their bid to sign Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder William Carvalho this summer, withThe Sun stating that they have tabled an offer of £28.5m.

The Portuguese international is a highly regarded prospect in European football at the moment, having really caught the eye with his displays for Sporting in recent seasons, as well as at international level.

Despite 13 caps for the senior Portugal national side, Carvalho is now with their Under-21s at the 2015 European Championships this summer, though he could also be in line for a big move if these reports are to be believed.

The Sun claim that Arsenal have previously failed with a £20m bid for the 23-year-old, and add that it might still take even more money to land him, with Sporting hoping not to lose him for anything less than his £37m release clause.

This might seem steap for a relatively unproven player, but there is enough evidence that Carvalho could be just what Arsenal need in midfield next season, with only Francis Coquelin really impressing in that defensive role for Arsene Wenger’s side in 2014/15.

The Frenchman took his chance in the first-team when brought back from a loan at Charlton Athletic, filling in for the injured Mikel Arteta and looking like one of the revelations of the season with his commanding displays in that role.

Still, more depth for Arsenal would certainly be a good thing as they look to mount more of a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season, with Chelsea winning it rather comfortably in 2014/15 after the Gunners’ slow start to the campaign.

Carvalho’s physical style of play and confidence on the ball should make him well suited to the demands of the English game....
