Arsene Wenger Picks His Perfect Arsenal Captain

Arsene Wenger is closing in on 20 years at Arsenal now. In that time he’s had many different players performing the role of captain but the Gunners boss has now chosen one man in particular as his perfect captain.

To no surprise, that man is Tony Adams, who skippered Arsenal from the age of 21 in 1988 for a further 14 years, winning four top flight titles along the way.

“First of all he was a very intelligent player who could analyse very well what was going on during the game. He could use his qualities and intelligence to use them at a optimum level.

“He was a mixture of a laid-back player who was very fierce and strong pride. He could always find that when he was bad like he had a bad ankle you wondered if he could play at the day of a competition.”

“This is the guy that always found the resources to be at his best. This was the brand of the back four when I arrived, they were all the same and like that,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.

“You wondered sometimes during the week if they would be available but they always surprised you and they were always much better than you predicted they would be.”

Together Adams and Wenger won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and three Community Shields during one of Arsenal’s golden generations around the late-nineties and early-noughties.

Adams went on to manage following his playing career with Wycombe and subsequently Portsmouth. He will go down as one of the greatest central defenders to have graced the English game and his 66 England caps are testament to this.

Since his retirement in 2002, Arsenal have gone on to win just one more league title. Two FA Cups in the last two seasons has ended a silverware drought but the current Arsenal fan base are crying out for a side like they witnessed towards the tail end of Adams’ career.

Currently sitting in second place in the table after just eight games, there is still at least scope to dream.
