‘I am ready’ Arsenal legend tells Wenger he can replace Coquelin

Gilberto Silva joked with Arsene Wenger that he could solve the Frenchman’s defensive midfield crisis after Francis Coquelin’s injury.

The Brazilian World Cup winner had never really been replaced at The Emirates until Coquelin’s emergence into Arsenal’s first-choice holding midfielder last season.

But Coquelin now faces a spell on the sidelines having injured his knee in the West Brom defeat.

Having established himself in the heart of the Arsenal midfield, the former France Under-21 international will be missing for the next three months.

And although Gilberto laughed with Wenger about being the perfect Coquelin replacement he was quick to underline the importance of the French midfielder to Arsenal.

“I told him I was ready,” he told the Guardian.

“Since I left if I am not wrong Arsenal didn’t have a player to fill that role until him. “They had some other players in that position like Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini, and before that Cesc Fàbregas.

“But not this type of player, the guy who holds the piano to let the others play. I hope he recovers well and in time to help Arsenal this season. They will need him for sure.”
