Are Arsenal planning to sign Barcelona defensive midfielder Sergi Samper for €12m ?

The front page of Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday has a transfer story relating to Arsenal. According to the paper, Arsene Wenger wants to bring Barcelona’s defensive midfielder Sergi Samper to the Gunners

The fresh update claims that Arsenal are poised to make a third attempt at signing Barcelona starlet Sergi Samper, in which the Gunners will pay the Barcelona B midfielder’s €12 million release clause to lure the 20-year-old to London.

Mundo Deportivo note that Arsenal initially tried to sign the player back in 2011 and then again last summer, while they also bill Samper as the “natural successor to Mikel Arteta”.

Noticeably, there was no mention of Francis Coquelin in the report.

MD also lay out the position of Barcelona and Sergi Samper himself.

For Barca, their preferred avenue is to loan Samper out this summer to a “big club”, but if that fails to materialise a deal with Arsenal could be on.

For Samper, he is said to be mulling over his future, however the midfielder is expected to respond to the offer in the “coming days”.

MD note that Samper’s chances of breaking into the Barca first team are limited, as he’s behind Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Sergi Roberto in the pecking order at the Camp Nou...
