Arsenal double-winner Ray Parlour says his former side can win the Premier League title this season.

Parlour remains Arsenal’s most featured Premier League player ever with 333 appearances and believes the signing of Petr Cech in the summer, can fire the Gunners to their first league title since ‘The Invincibles’ won it in 2004.

Parlour said: “I certainly believe Arsenal have a got a great chance this year at the league. Nobody expected Chelsea to do so poorly and Manchester United are getting points but they’re not playing great. I think Man City are the ones to beat but, for me, its all about April time.

“If you’re in there with a chance to win the league, then that’s when it gets more important. This is when your group of players really have to concentrate and show that bit of bottle.

“Certainly the players have improved a lot, players like Sanchez, Ozil’s been superb this year. And maybe in January, Arsene Wenger might just go into the transfer market. If there are people available who’ll make them better, then I’m sure he will. The injury crisis might be a problem but I’m hoping now they can get players back quickly.”

Arsenal’s record signing from Real Madrid, Mesut Ozil, tops the Premier League assist charts with 10 and has been outstanding for the Gunners so far this season. Parlour believes that after an indifferent start to life in north London, Ozil is now showing why Arsenal parted with £42.5m to bring the German playmaker to the Emirates Stadium.

“Ozil has always had quality. It does take time for some players to settle, their families come to another country and I remember a player I played with, who was a superb player, Robert Pires. That first season he didn’t really hit the ground running, took his time, struggled with the language and the intensity of the game.

“I think in Ozil, once you play for Real Madrid and you’re playing the bottom sides in Spain, it’s a little bit easier. In England you don’t get any easy games. I think he knows the pace of the game now and he’s learned from referees what you get for free-kicks and what you don’t. I’d put him in a very similar category to Robert Pires,” said Parlour.

When Arsenal signed Petr Cech from rivals Chelsea in the summer, eyebrows were raised in the capital as one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers in recent years switched allegiances. Though Parlour claims the influence of Cech in the dressing room alone, can provide Arsenal with invaluable experience.

“Cech was an amazing signing. It was lucky that he wanted to stay in London. It wasn’t ideal for Chelsea to let him go to one of their rivals but they’ve shown him a lot of respect for what he did at Chelsea. The obvious choice was for him to go to Arsenal, and he’s been superb. You see the quality he has and the back four in front of him are really assured.

“He’s made some crucial saves and in that game against Liverpool at the Emirates, he was superb. With his experience, winning big trophies, I’m sure he’ll help the players hugely in the dressing room. He’ll be a major influence if they are going to win the league this year.”
