Wenger confirms new deal for key Gunner but defender set for exit

Arsene Wenger says Nacho Monreal is set to sign a new long-term deal with Arsenal.

The Spaniard has been an instrumental player for the Gunners ever since he ousted Kieran Gibbs as the club’s first-choice left-back last season.

A solid defender who is equally adept at going forward, Monreal has developed a strong understanding with Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Hector Bellerin in a back four that is among the strongest in the Premier League.

The club will now reward the 29-year-old for the improvements he has made since he signed in 2013 by handing him a new three-year deal.

“We will announce that at some stage when it is finished,” Wenger said. “It is not over the line completely but we are not far off.

With Monreal and Gibbs competing for a spot on the left and Bellerin, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers fighting for the right-back berth Wenger says he is pleased with his depth at the full-back positions.

But the manager admits Debuchy could be on his way out of the club as he seeks more playing time before Euro 2016 in his home country.

“Of course I am happy with my left backs and my right backs,” Wenger said. “But Debuchy at the moment does not get enough games, the European Championships are in France so it is a bit difficult at the moment for him to live with that.”
