MATHIEU DEBUCHY insists he has never experienced such fierce competition for a starting place as he has at Arsenal.

The former Lille and Newcastle right-back has suffered a stop-start season due to injury and admits he faces a serious struggle to reclaim a starting role.

Debuchy has not featured in the league since the middle of January and has had to watch Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers perform well in his absence.

Debuchy has a fight on his hands to nail down the right-back position for his own before the start of next season.

And, the Frenchman claims this competitiveness will spur the Gunners on to greater things.

He told Arsenal's official website: "I think [this is the most intense competition I have had], yes.

"We have a lot of good players who can play at right back, I think of Hector and Calum. They have both done well this season.

"They are young and talented, with a huge potential to become very good players.

"They’ve proved so far this season that they have the qualities to be at Arsenal.

Debuchy added: "We have a very good relationship between us, good affinities as with the rest of the team.

"We do some very good work in training, and it is always better to train in this environment. We've never had any problems between us.

"Arsenal is a big club and it is normal to be in competition with other players.

"This is how football works. I believe it makes everyone more competitive, and it is good for the club."

The Unbeaten In Manchester Season

By Goonerholic

I saw talk before the match of Arsene setting up to go with an attacking gameplay having secured victories at City and United this season playing a much more compact game than usual. It was no surprise, given those two results, that once again we set our stall at Old Trafford to defend first and foremost, and look to hit the home side on the counter.
