Arsenal Name Third Choice Goalkeeper

In the unlikely scenario that both Petr Cech and David Ospina are ruled out of action at the same time, Matthew Macey will be Arsenal’s goalkeeper.

After nearly two years in the Gunners’ youth ranks, the 20-year-old has been promoted to the first team for this season.

The loaning out of Wojciech Szczesny and Emiliano Martinez to Roma and Wolves respectively meant that the Gunners had only two senior shot-stoppers left in the squad to call upon.

After deciding against the signing of another goalkeeper before the transfer window closed last week, Arsene Wenger has now chosen to keep faith in an inexperienced Macey.

The English youngster will compete with David Ospina for a starting berth in cup competitions as Arsenal prepare for a busy schedule in the League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League again.

During an injury crisis last season, Macey, who spent a month on loan at Accrington Stanley in January, was named on the bench in the 1-0 victory at West Brom.

With a height of 6 ft 6 in – as tall as Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois – the Englishman is currently the tallest player in the Arsenal squad along with Per Mertesacker.
