Mesut Ozil is to be offered Arsenal's highest ever compensation package to remain at the club, according to a report.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who recently set a Premier League record for assists in consecutive games, joined the Gunners in September 2013 for a club-record £42.4m fee.

Italian website Tutto Mercato Web reports that Ozil will be offered a salary package worth £8.2m a year to extend his current contract, which expires in 2018, amid rumoured interest from Real Madrid.

Ozil's goalscoring involvement this season has been instrumental in Arsenal's rise up the Premier League table to second, two points adrift of leaders Leicester City. 16/12/15

Former England and Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny is the best defender in the Premier League.

The French international was one of the Gunners' standout performers as they defeated Olympiacos 3-0 on Wednesday to reach the last 16 of the Champions League. Ferdinand has admitted that he has been impressed by what he has seen from the 30-year-old centre-back. "Koscielny for me, when he's on form I think he's the best defender in the league," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "[Manchester City's Vincent] Kompany's not fit enough consistently enough and he's turned into a real top-class defender." Koscielny joined Arsenal from Lorient in 2009. 11/12/15

Olympiacos goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez Gago has stated that the team are confident of beating Arsenal in their final match of the Champions League group stages this evening.

The Gunners go into the match needing to beat the Greek champions by two clear goals or more to progress to the knockout rounds of the competition. Olympiacos beat Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates in September, and Roberto is confident that home advantage could see his side come out on top again at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

"We are at home and that's a big advantage for us. I think that gives us a bigger chance and is vital for us," the Daily Mail quotes him as saying. "No-one really gave us much hope of getting through, no-one believed in us and now we can do it.

Our victory in London was a warning to everyone. It wasn't lucky, we deserved it, and it raised our confidence. We are convinced that Arsenal won't win in Athens.

"The atmosphere will be tough and intense. If we play a good match then that is more important." Olympiacos are second in Group F ahead of the game, while Arsenal are three points behind in third. 9/12/15

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has heaped praise on Arsenal team mate Mesut Ozil for his part in the team's rise to the top of the Premier League. "This year he has been a real focal part of the side and I think that has helped his confidence," Oxlade-Chamberlain told the club's official website.

"We know that if we can give Mesut the ball, we can trust that he will make things happen time after time.

"He has always been an unbelievable player and a player I have admired for a number of years before he came here and even when he has been at Arsenal he has always shown the quality.

"I just think his quality is coming out a bit more. Obviously he has a couple of good players around him to help him but that has really helped him to come out and show how good he is, week in and week out.

Mesut has always been a quality player at Arsenal and this year he has been amazing so let's hope he can keep it up. 15/12/15

Arsene Wenger has insisted that he does not need to buy Karim Benzema because he has enough quality in Olivier Giroud.

The Premier League club have been linked with the Real Madrid forward in the past, but Giroud has found form of late after scoring a hat-trick in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Olympiacos, which put the club through to the last 16 of the Champions League.

When asked about Arsenal's potential interest in Benzema, Wenger told reporters:

"I just said that Olivier Giroud is a great striker, so behind that we cannot buy Karim Benzema!"

Wenger also commented on the legal case involving Benzema, who has been suspended from the France national team while an investigation into a sex-tape scandal is ongoing.

"I think it's a legal case, and as long as it has not been judged, you have to wait for the judgement,"

Wenger told reporters. "At the moment he cannot play because he is under investigation and as long as he is not cleared, he should not play." 12/12/15

Olivier Giroud has insisted that the Gunners will have to give their as they face Olympiacos in the Champions League this evening.

The North Londoners take on the Greek champions in the Karaiskakis Stadium, needing to beat them by two clear goals at least to reach the knockout rounds of the competition.

Giroud has claimed that while Arsenal are missing a number of players through injury, they still have enough quality to get the result they need in Piraeus.

"We'll have to be at 100% because 95% won't be sufficient," he told L'Equipe.

"It's a group that was in our range and we put ourselves in difficulty by losing our first two matches, now we have the chance to show our mental strength. "We must have 40% of our team missing, but we have a more well-equipped squad than in previous years.

"The guys who have replaced them did the job at the weekend, like Joel Campbell. We know that we have the quality to impose ourselves there."  9/12/15

Arsene Wenger admitted that it was a "perfect week" for Arsenal as his side climbed to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey secured the points at Villa Park just days after the Gunners booked their spot in the knockout stage of the Champions League with a 3-0 win against Olympiacos.

"It was a perfect week for us," Wenger told BBC Sport. "We spent a lot of energy away in the Champions League on Wednesday but found the resources to win again here today, in another away match.

"In the first half we were in control but in the second half the legs had gone a bit. But we were mature, and maybe a bit lucky on one or two occasions, but overall it is great to come here and to win away again."

Leicester City can return to the top of the table with victory over Chelsea on Monday night. 13/12/15

Dennis Bergkamp has insisted he has no plans to become a head coach, ruling himself out of the running for the vacant manager's job at Swansea City.

The former Arsenal forward has been linked with the position following the sacking of Garry Monk, and he has previously been touted as a future Gunners boss.

Swansea parted company with Monk on Wednesday following a run of just one win in 11 Premier League matches, a streak that has left the Welsh club only one point above the relegation zone.

Bergkamp has served as an assistant with Ajax since 2011, but is not interested in taking the step up at this point in his coaching career.

"I currently have no ambition to become a head coach," he told Voetbal International.

"Also, I still have a good job to do at Ajax and I see my role here in the next few years." 12/12/15

Aaron Ramsey says he is honoured that Steven Gerrard described the Arsenal star as the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League.

The Wales international produced a dominant performance on the wing for Arsene Wenger’s side in their 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in Greece on Wednesday night.

Ramsey, who recently returned from a hamstring problem to ease Arsene Wenger’s injury crisis, created Olivier Giroud’s opener in theChampions League clash.

Gerrard told BT Sport: “When he’s in that form, he’s the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League. You’ve got to play your best players where they want to be – and he’ll want to be in the middle.

“For me, [when he is] on top form, you build your team around Aaron Ramsey. He has got that ability, especially if he can get to the form where he was a couple of years ago.”

The 24-year-old has also scored two goals and made one assist in 11 Premier League games this season, including Arsenal’s third in a 3-1 win against Sunderland. 11/12/15

Sunderland's trip to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round is not among the five ties selected for television broadcast by the BBC and BT Sport

Sunderland's FA Cup third round tie against holders Arsenal at The Emirates Stadium will take place on Saturday, January 9 (kick-off 3pm).

Ticket details for the fixture have yet to be announced.

The cup draw sees Sam Allardyce’s Sunderland side make a rapid return to The Emirates, having lost against the Gunners in the Premier League last weekend.

But the Black Cats were victorious last time the clubs met in this competition, winning 2-0 at the Stadium of Light in the fifth round back in February 2012.

Sunderland’s last FA Cup game at Arsenal - at the Gunners’ old Highbury home - came in the third round in 1991, with the home side winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Alan Smith and Anders Limpar. 11/12/15

Arsenal are set to tie up a deal to sign striker Aleksandr Kokorin from Dynamo Moscow in January, according to Russian newspaper Izvestia.

Kokorin is out of contract at the end of the season and will have to halve his wages in order to extend his deal with his current club, who are in experiencing serious financial problems.

That has led to interest from Zenit in his signature but the report claims Kokorin would prefer to join Arsenal and the Gunners are negotiating a deal to be completed in the New Year.

Dynamo hope to receive €6 million (£4.3m) for the 24-year-old despite his contract status.

Kokorin made his debut for Dynamo in 2008 and his impressive form during the 2012-13 season saw him join Anzhi Makhachkala for €19m (£13.8m).

However, the newly wealthy club's budget was massively reduced a short time later and without playing a game for his new club due to injury, Kokorin was sold back to Dynamo.

He has scored four goals in eight league games this season, with the Russian season currently in its winter break. 11/12/15
