Arsenal confident Wilshere will make his return against Southampton on Boxing Day.

Jack Wilshere is set to make his return from his latest injury setback for Arsenal in time to play a major role in the hectic Christmas schedule, as per the Mirror.

The newspaper reports the Gunners are confident he will be fit to face Southampton on Boxing day.

While the majority of the other top European leagues will take their winter break, the Premier League will be busier than usual, with the clubs playing three league contests in the space of seven days.

Arsenal are already worryingly short in midfield due to a number of recent injuries to their players including Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Therefore, the return of Wilshere will be a huge boost to Arsene Wenger’s squad and it will come just in time for the busiest part of the season for the top flight clubs.

The 23-year-old has not featured at all for the Gunners this term having suffered a hairline leg fracture just days before the campaign was due to begin.

However, the midfielder should be available for the Boxing day contest with Southampton, the match with Bournemouth on the 28th December and then the January 2nd tie with Newcastle, as per the Mirror.

This set-back is the latest in a long list of injuries suffered by Wilshere already in his relatively short career. He made just 15 league appearances last season, scoring twice
