Martin Keown told the Daily Mail that he feels current midfielder Jack Wilshere is now offering a real goal threat for his country.

Wilshere showed with his brace against Slovenia last weekend that he’s got it in his locker to play a midfield role, where he’s the man breaking forward from deep positions to make the difference in attack.

He’s got a spring in his step and Keown has predicted that he could go up another level if he’s consistent with his goal scoring.

“When his game comes off he looks irresistible in the final third; so he will have to do both. If he can sit deep and arrive late then we have the perfect midfielder,” he said.

“Wilshere is now offering that. When you start scoring goals for your country you go to another level.”

The challenge for Wilshere will be scoring goals at club level, which will arguably be more difficult in Arsene Wenger’s team.

Wenger has the creative and forward thinking boxes ticked in terms of midfielders who can make the difference for the Gunners in the final third.

Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey are just a few examples of technically gifted players, who get into good attacking positions and are capable of making the difference.

It’s also going to be a challenge for Wilshere in terms of staying fit. He’s had problems with his ankles throughout his career and the end of the season has come at a bad time because he was looking hungry and fresh.

He’s looked superb driving England’s midfield forward and it will be interesting to see if Wenger restructures things slightly to give him more of an attacking role at club level moving forward....
