Jack Wilshere has targeted more England goals after opening his international account in his country’s 3-2 victory over Slovenia.

It took the Arsenal midfielder 28 appearances to break his goalscoring duck but his first and second England goals were worth the wait as his double helped Roy Hodgson’s men maintain their perfect record in the European Qualifiers.

“It’s a great feeling,” Wilshere said. “It’s nice to get off the mark.

“Just playing for your country is a fantastic feeling but scoring is even better.

“Hopefully I can get a few more in the future.”

England had to come from behind to earn all three points in Ljubljana and complete their first unbeaten international season in 24 years and Wilshere believes the Three Lions showed tremendous character,

He added: “We started the first half really well.

“We wanted to respond from the Ireland game. I thought we dominated but unfortunately they hit us on the break and the goal knocked us for the last 10 minutes.

“But we came out in the second half and won the ball back in dangerous positions. We created a few chances before the goals came.

“When they got the goal back it looked like we’d put in all that hard work for nothing, but we showed great character and it was a great finish from Rooney.”

Wilshere has been in excellent form for both Arsenal and England in recent weeks after returning from a long injury lay-off and he is already looking forward to getting back into action ahead of what he described as a big season.

“I’m excited for next season,“ the Arsenal man said. “I’m in a strange position where I don’t want the season to end. I’ve just come back.

“I’m playing well but luckily this year it’s just a three-week break.

“I’ll have a week’s rest and then I’ll get back in the gym to maintain my fitness because next season is a big season for me.”...
