Francis Coquelin's meteoric rise yet to be capped with France call-up

When France face England at Wembley, it will undoubtedly be a poignant occasion for all concerned. The eyes of both nations will be glued to Wembley Stadium for what it's hoped will be a heart-warming show of solidarity and sporting excellence.

One of those watching on from afar will be Arsenal's Francis Coquelin, who still awaits his first call-up to the senior France squad.

The country of his birth will be facing off against the nation where he has made his professional life, and yet he is not in contention for a place.

It's the one thing missing from his remarkable ascendance. Little more than 12 months ago, he was playing in the second tier of English football with Charlton Athletic. Now he's a regular starter in both Premier League and Champions League. Coquelin's unique skill-set has made him absolutely integral to the the gunners first-team -- it's no exaggeration to suggest that he's probably one of the first names on Arsene Wenger's team-sheet.

It's for career trajectories like this that the term 'meteoric rise' was surely coined.

Yet France coach Didier Deschamps has thus far remained unmoved. At 24, Coquelin is still awaiting his first senior call-up. Although he has many years ahead of him to amend that situation, he'll be particularly keen to do in the coming months.

Next summer, France host the European Championships, and Coquelin is understandably eager to make his major tournament bow on home soil.
