Arsene Wenger reveals Arsenal’s first January transfer

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club have completed the £5million signing of Mohamed Elneny from Basel, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

Elneny has recently been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates and the Gunners moved quickly, with the Egypt international completing his medical last week.

However, the process has been halted due to a delay in his work permit, making the club unable to officially announce the deal.

Yet, after Arsenal’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Liverpool on Wednesday, Wenger has confirmed the midfielder has signed for the club and could be in contention to start against Stoke City this weekend.

“Elneny will of course join us. He has joined us,” he said.  “We will see if he can qualify for Sunday.”

The 23-year-old’s arrival will make him the Gunners’ first January transfer, but while it is unlikely that Wenger will purchase another player this month, France right back Mathieu Debuchy is expected to depart amid his struggles to regain a first-team place.

Elneny has made 28 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six goals.
