Arsene Wenger wants to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in a more central midfield role

Arsene Wenger has revealed plans of deploying Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in a more central midfield role in the future.

The English youngster, yet to score in the Premier League this season, has racked up 13 goals so far in his Arsenal career after arriving from Southampton in 2011.

Despite being experimented in different positions, Wenger insists Oxlade-Chamberlain might not end up as a winger after all.

“He has the attributes to play in central midfield, he has that important quality – a little surge to get out of pressure.” Wenger said

“One of the things to get out of pressure is to have a dribble to get away from the guy who closes you down. Nobody has that more than Ox”

The 22-year-old has attracted criticism in the past for retaining the ball for too long, but Wenger believes Oxlade-Chamberlain’s ability to dribble anywhere on the pitch is his biggest asset.

“That is why he could be suited for the modern game because he has that capacity to get out of the pressure.” he added

“That is why I played 4-3-3 against Sunderland as he Ox is really suited to be right-sided, box to box in a 4-3-3 – he really fits in there”
