Arsene Wenger has paid tribute to Theo Walcott for his all-round performance in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium

The 26-year-old striker set up Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez - who also opened the scoring - as the Gunners' stunned their visitors with a 20-minute blitz in North London.

"I must say Walcott had a hugely committed performance today in a hugely convincing way," Wenger told Arsenal's official website.

"He didn't score but I like to praise the strikers when they don't score and contribute and give assists. He was involved in two goals – Ozil's and Alexis' [second] one.

"He did really fight today and showed he can fight, commit and protect the ball as well.

He is gaining some aspects of his game as a centre forward and they are improving."

The victory saw Arsenal leapfrog United into second place on goal difference, two points behind Manchester City.

Arsene Wenger has urged Arsenal fans to return to the Emirates Stadium to watch “quality football” after plenty stayed away for their win over West Brom.

While official figures for tickets sold put the attendance at 59,563, in reality there were far fewer supporters inside the Emirates Stadium to watch Alexis Sanchez score twice in a comfortable 2-0 victory.

There were also banners unveiled at full-time calling for an end to Wenger’s near-20 year reign, but the Frenchman said afterwards he wants the stay-away supporters to come back and get behind the side.

Asked for a message to the fans who opted against attending, Wenger replied: “To come and support the team. If you love football, you go out there and I think you see quality football.

"That’s what we try to give to our people. It was a special night as well, Thursday night, and I don’t know if you are intelligent enough, nor am I, to detect exactly why everybody that did not turn up tonight did not turn up.
