CHARLIE NICHOLAS believes Arsenal can lay down a marker for next season with victory over Chelsea on Sunday.

The Gunners sit 10 points behind the leaders with six games remaining and must beat the Blues to keep their very faint title hopes alive.

Arsene Wenger’s side have mounted a late challenge to Chelsea after winning their last eight league games.

Arsenal have not beaten Chelsea since a 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge in October 2011 and defeat at the Emirates would allow Jose Mourinho’s side to wrap up the title if they beat Leicester next Wednesday.

But while Nicholas believes Arsenal won’t catch Chelsea even if they win, he believes victory could give them a psychological edge over Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool going into next season.

“It’s high time that Wenger and Arsenal proved a point against Chelsea - I just think it’s Arsene Wenger’s time to say ‘we are getting closer’,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Chelsea are going to be champions, even if Arsenal win this, but this is the first time in a long time I’ve gone into a Chelsea match thinking Arsenal will adapt to whatever happens.

"They need to win the game to make it interesting, but at the same time they don’t want to get caught out in the first half-hour of the match, because when Chelsea go in front, they don’t lose.

"That’s just a fabric of Jose Mourinho - he’s absolutely the best at managing a lead to get the result he requires, like he did against Manchester United.”
