Aaron Ramsey today insisted Arsenal are closing the gap on Chelsea and claims they can win the Premier League next season.

The Gunners sealed back-to-back FA Cup triumphs with a 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa on Saturday to become the most successful team in the competition’s history on 12 victories.

Arsene Wenger’s side finished 12 points behind League champions Chelsea as they failed to recover from a slow start, winning just two of their opening eight games.

But after a consistent second half of the campaign capped with another trophy, Ramsey believes they can land English football’s top prize for the first time since 2004.

“I think we are [closing the gap on Chelsea],” he told Standard Sport. “I think we’ve learned in the big games how to manage them and it will be important to go into next season with that sort of mentality.

“The rest of the games take care of themselves. If we can get off to a good start next year, put ourselves into contention we’ll have a good year and a successful challenge for the Premier League. It has been a successful season now. I said before that we needed to win this for it to be that and we have managed to do that. It is not an easy thing to do to win back-to-back FA Cups. It hasn’t happened a lot.

“So it is pretty special thing for us to take into next year and if we can get off to a good start — and we don’t have to qualify for the Champions League — we can focus on the League and go from there.

“As long as we keep players fit throughout the season and not lose players in vital parts, I think we will have a great chance.”
